Successful Registration for Formula Student Germany

Last year, within eight seconds of opening registration, the 2009 Formula Student Germany (FSG)event was fully subscribed. This extraordinary feat required VDI, the German Formula Student organisers, to reconsider the entire registration procedure. VDI felt that the chance of successful registration for Formula Student Germany should reflect a team’s degree of preparation and knowledge of the event, rather than the speed of its internet connection and quantity of members registering. This has led to the creation of a quiz preceding the actual registration process. Only after answering all quiz questions correctly may a team proceed to register for FSG. Teams that do not pass the quiz on their first attempt are allowed to resubmit their corrected quiz form an indefinite number of times. However, the frequency of resubmission is limited to once every thirty seconds.

The quiz consisted of a number of questions which tested the team’s knowledge on the 2010 FSG and FSAE Rules. Brunel Racing was the first successfully registered team in German competition today with a quiz time of 1 minute 45 seconds. The team was the fastest registering team by over 30 seconds allowing Brunel Racing to once again be car number 43.

End of Term Karting

The first stage of Brunel Racing’s 2010 driver selection began with an end of term kart race. 20 team members took part in a half-hour endurance race at Sandown Park kart circuit in Surrey in late December. The track was wet and slippery allowing drivers to show their adaptability to adverse weather conditions. After analysis of the lap times, qualification and the overall finishing order, several possible contenders for the chance to drive BR-XI at the 2010 Formula Student competitions have emerged. The driver evaluation process will be ongoing with further karting events planned for early 2010. Shortlisted drivers will ultimately get a trial in the 2009 car to test their skills in a Formula Student vehicle.

“Learn to Win” at Brunel

Brunel Racing recently hosted its own “Learn to Win” event on Brunel University’s campus. Three design judges from Formula Student Germany and Formula Student UK attended and spoke to the team about the design of a Formula Student car, followed by a Q&A session and a small design review. Although many other teams were invited Brunel Racing was joined only by the University of Hertfordshire who took the time to benefit from the event. The feedback was very helpful and the team would like to extend a special thanks to the judges for attending the event.

Professional Motorsport World Expo 2009

The management team has been busy looking for sponsorship and suppliers, having attended the Professional Motorsport World Expo 2009 in Cologne, Germany early in November. The event is open exclusively to people actively involved in motorsport and acts as a meeting place where professionals can exchange on technologies, innovations and ideas on how to drive the industry. The stands and visitors at the show had a wide range of backgrounds from within the motorsport industry ranging from single seater racing to rallying, off-roading, and Formula Student. The event was a great occasion for the team to meet new suppliers and to speak with experienced and respected motorsport professionals. The management team also took the opportunity to thank many of our sponsors in person at their stands.

BR-X Tyre Testing Session

After its mass audit BR-X was put back together and the team completed their shakedown of BR-X around Brunel University’s campus. The engine started successfully for the first time since returning from Formula Student Germany in August.
After the successful shakedown the team packed up BR-X and went to Bruntingthorpe Proving Grounds for some comparative testing between Avon and Hoosiers tyres. The team performed several data acquisition runs which included acceleration, brake and sprint tests. Unfortunately, the testing session was cut short before the team managed to get data for an endurance run due to a brakes failure. The data collected will be invaluable to the team’s suspension design and the development of the driver aide systems. Completion of the endurance testing will be taking
place over the coming weeks.

Learn To Win 2009

Brunel Racing attended Learn to Win 2009 organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. The event, held at the Institution’s headquarters in London, involves a series of lectures and workshops focusing on the Formula Student competition. Learn to Win is a great opportunity
to speak with experts from industry and the competition’s judges about the design of a Formula Student car and the static events of the competition. This year 13 Formula Student teams from around Europe took part with participants arriving from as far as Denmark to attend.

Brunel Racing Placed 16th at Hockenheim

Brunel Racing has had a successful competition at Formula Student Germany, again exceeding performance targets to finish 16th out of 78 teams overall making us the 2nd-placed UK team at both events this year.

The team arrived at the circuit on Tuesday afternoon following a long drive from our workshop in Uxbridge through the night and day. To ensure a speedy entrance into the competition site, some members joined the registration queue that evening, providing entertainment for our neighbouring teams through the night with the help of the sound system in our hire car.

With everyone in high spirits and excited to see the start of the competition, we were officially registered on Wednesday morning and able to set up our pit garage and prepare our car for scrutineering.

On Thursday, BR-X passed technical and safety inspection with only one small modification required to the brake caliper bolt locking mechanism, before going on to successfully complete the tilt, noise and brake tests first time.

Friday saw the static events, beginning early in the morning with the Business Plan event - a refined version of our presentation from Silverstone - delivered once again by Nick John and Michael Allen. Later in the afternoon, BR-X was lifted in the car elevator to the upstairs area of the competition for Design and Cost Judging. The work of the team in the static events earned us an impressive 7th in the Business event, 34th in design and 44th in Cost.

Having passed scrutineering, Friday was also the first time BR-X was able to run in Germany. A test on the Bosch chassis dyno showed the car to be producing an impressive 80bhp at the wheels. Later our drivers were able to complete some last-minute refinement to BR-X on the practice track, ensuring the optimum configurations for traction control and suspension setup were used.

Saturday morning consisted of the Acceleration and Skid Pad events. Despite the great humidity and threat of rain, the Hockenheimring stayed dry ensuring a level playing field for all the competing teams. Drivers Andy Tomlin and George McDonald completed two runs each in the events, ultimately placing the team in a very competitive 5th place in each.

On Saturday afternoon, Rob Still and Andrew Bonjour completed the Autocross event, setting two hot-lap times each on a highly complex circuit. Despite some very tough competition from the other teams, BR-X managed to post a fastest time of 57.1s to secure 14th place in this event.

Having completed the dynamic events of Saturday, Sunday was devoted entirely to the gruelling Endurance event. Cars were subjected to a 22km race under the intense German sun on the same track as the Autocross event. The combination of the heat and the bumpy track saw many cars fail to complete the event, with a very large number of mechanical failures seen across the entire field.

Rob Still and Andrew Bonjour were however able to complete the full distance in BR-X, despite some problems in the last laps with a loose rear wishbone clevis drastically reducing the pace of the car by up to ten seconds a lap. We were ultimately placed 19th in the Endurance event, and the whole team was incredibly happy to have successfully completed every event of the weekend, particularly with BR-X suffering from such a potentially serious problem towards the end.

Finally we were placed 16th of the 78 competing teams at this incredibly tough competition, making us second-placed UK university once again. The whole team were pleased to celebrate the result at the infamous Formula Student Germany Mahle afterparty long into Monday morning, before embarking on the long drive back to England the next day.

We would like to thank all our sponsors for making two brilliant results possible in the 2009 season, and everyone on the team for their commitment and extremely hard work through many months and many late nights to ensure BR-X was in top form for both competitions.

As recent Brunel graduates, the management team are now moving on from Formula Student, passing the task of designing and building an even more competitive car on to select members of the BR-X design team for the coming academic year.

Everyone who has been with the team throughout the season and helped complete the British and German events is incredibly pleased to have had the opportunity to work on the project, and very proud of the results we have achieved - we wish the 2009/10 Brunel Racing team the best of luck for the competitions of next summer!
